Established in July 1990, Lakhisarai covers an area of 1228 sq km. With a total population of 8, 02,225, the district has a population density of 653 per sq km (2001). The sex ratio is 921 females per 1000 males. The district has a literacy rate of 47.96%. Divided into three parts, hilly area, flood hit area and plain area, Lakhisarai is surrounded by Munger, Sheikhpura, Begusarai and Patna.

The district is easily reachable through its proper road and rail linkages. On the one hand 60% of the villages possess metallic roads and on the other hand NH 80 connects it to other states of India. Kiul Junction is one of the prime landmarks of this place.

With a highly fertile land, the district mainly produces paddy, wheat and maize. Being a natural reserve of sand, Kiul River helps in generating revenue for the District. Stone mines are also found in abundance. There is an unorganized industry of iron rods, private rice mills, sindur factories and insecticides in the Lakhisarai.

Being part of the erstwhile Pal Dynasty, Lakhisarai is popular among tourists for its religious significance. The place has many famous temples, some of which even dates back to its first ruler. Some of the district's special appeals include:
