Orissa is situated in the east of India, and bounded by Jharkand, Bay of Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Chhatisgarh on the north, east, south and west respectively.

Its dense population is concentrated on the coastal alluvial plain. Spanning an area of 60,162 square miles, it has a moderately indented coastline that lacks good ports, except for the deepwater facility at Panadip.

Orissa's long coastline makes it a storehouse of mineral wealth. This makes the state attractive to foreign investors. The state is also an emerging player in the outsourcing and IT services industry.

Though environmental concerns and land acquisition concerns have been opposed by the locals, the total planned investment in the state reaches up to 90 billion US dollars, which includes research and development in the fields of education, health as well as infrastructure.

A forecast of a Morgan Stanley report stated that Orissa will be flooded with investments for manufacturing-related activities, in the same way that Bangalore attracted software investment in the 1990s.
