Thanjavur was ultimately taken over by the British soldiers who ruled the place till independence.

Thanjavur is also commonly referred to as the Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu. The region experiences a tropical climate with moderate summers and mild winters. Winter rainfall is a common feature of Thanjavur due to the north eastern monsoonal winds.

The culturally enriched local indigenous inhabitants of Thanjavur specialize in the various performing arts of classical music and dance of the region. Almost all the people of Thanjavur are masters of Carnatic music. Bharatnatyam dance is famous among the native population of the ancient city of Thanjavur.
